DHS Teacher of the Year

 Cristina Kingsbury

I was born and raised in Waterbury, Connecticut. I currently reside in Waterbury with my husband, Mathew, who is a social worker and our two children, Julian & Veda. I also have a stepson, Joey, who is currently a junior at Bangor High School in Maine.

I started my educational path to become a teacher at POST University during the 2003-2004 school year. I then enrolled into Southern CT State University to study English and earn my Bachelors Degree. In 2009, I graduated with my undergraduate degree. Lastly, I attended the University of Bridgeport and earned my Masters degree to become a certified Secondary 7-12) Educator.

I started my teaching career here in Derby as a student teacher. Since then, I have taught for eight years at all grade levels with the exception of freshmen. Additionally, I have instructed students in RAISE Academy for three years. Previously coming from Waterbury schools, I realized that my heart has always been to work in a smaller school district such as Derby. I take pride in our school culture daily and promote that energy onto our students. I love teaching and working with young adults, especially upperclassmen, as they prepare for their futures.

Currently in my career, I am starting to mentor new teachers into the profession. In my future, I would love to go back to school to study Special Education or School Counseling.

In the meantime, I enjoy traveling with my family and dining out with my friends.
